POTS Check is a home wellness screening tool that helps you explore whether you may have Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) — a condition affecting blood flow that causes symptoms like dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and fatigue when standing.
Using your Apple Watch and iPhone, POTS Check guides you through the NASA Lean Test, a clinically-recognized screening protocol that monitors your heart rate response when transitioning from lying down to standing.

- Instant results and PDF export
- Data stored in-memory only (cleared when you end session)
- Perfect for first-time users exploring the app

How does the NASA Lean Test work?
The test consists of three phases:
- Baseline (5 minutes): Lie down while your Apple Watch monitors your heart rate
- Standing (10 minutes): Stand upright against a wall while continuing to monitor heart rate
- Recovery (1 minute, optional): Measure heart rate normalization
The app analyzes your heart rate change (ΔHR) and applies age-appropriate POTS screening criteria.
What are the age-based thresholds?
- Ages 13-19 (Pediatric): POTS-consistent if ΔHR ≥40 bpm
- Ages 20+ (Adult): POTS-consistent if ΔHR ≥30 bpm
- Under 13: App cannot be used (COPPA compliance)
Does POTS Check measure blood pressure?
No. Apple Watch does not measure blood pressure. POTS Check allows you to manually enter blood pressure readings if you have a separate BP cuff. Blood pressure tracking is optional and helps detect orthostatic hypotension or hypertension.
Is my health data private and secure?
Yes. POTS Check is designed with privacy-first principles:
- All data stays on your device (no cloud upload)
- Secure Account data is encrypted at rest
- We never sell your health data to third parties
- Optional anonymous analytics (opt-in, can disable in Settings)
- You control all data export and deletion
Can I share my results with my doctor?
Yes! POTS Check generates professional PDF reports that you can export and share with your healthcare provider. The PDF includes:
- Test date and time
- Heart rate data and analysis
- Blood pressure readings (if entered)
- Symptom logs (if recorded)
- Posture quality score
- Age-based POTS screening interpretation
What if I experience symptoms during the test?
Stop the test immediately if you feel:
- Severe dizziness or lightheadedness
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Fainting or near-fainting
- Any concerning or unsafe symptoms
Sit or lie down immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. POTS Check includes a "Stop Test" button in the Watch app and iPhone app for your safety.
How do I manage my data?
You have full control over your data:
- Export: Settings → Export → Choose PDF or TTL format
- Delete: Settings → Delete All Data (requires confirmation)
- Health Profile: Settings → Account → Health Profile (Secure Account only)
Your data is stored locally and never uploaded to cloud servers without your explicit action.
Troubleshooting
The app isn't detecting my Apple Watch
- Ensure your Apple Watch is paired with your iPhone
- Check that both devices are on the same WiFi network or Bluetooth is enabled
- Restart both devices
- Re-install the Watch app if needed
Heart rate data isn't syncing
- Verify HealthKit permissions:
iOS Settings → Privacy → Health → POTS Check - Ensure "Heart Rate" read permission is enabled
- Keep Watch app open during the test
- Wait for sync to complete after the test (can take 30-60 seconds)
Posture detection isn't working
- Enable Motion & Fitness:
iOS Settings → Privacy → Motion & Fitness - Keep your iPhone on your body (pocket or armband) during the standing phase
- Ensure you're standing still against a wall during the standing phase
- Avoid excessive movement which can affect posture quality score
The app crashed during my test
If the app crashes:
- Restart the app — recent data may be recoverable in Secure Account
- Guest Mode tests cannot be recovered after a crash
- Report the issue via the App Store review or contact support
- Include device details and steps to reproduce
